General - How to open a Cubase VST .cpr file ?
With Cubase 4, opening a Cubase-VST project file is not possible anymore. The only possibility is to use Cubase SX 3 - because it is able to open such files - and convert it to a file that C4 or C5 can read/open. But what if you don't own SX 3 ? If you own a C4 or C5 licence in your Steinberg key, you can use any previous Cubase version (SX1, 2 or 3). Steinberg also give you the possibility to download SX3's installer file. Follow the link.

General - [SX 3] Problems with USB dongle detection.
If you own a PC with an AMD processor and an NVidia NForce3 chipset, you might be concerned. Keys with a number below xxx 523 326 are not NForce3-compatible. To remedy the problem, you may try to plug your key into an active USB hub. If it still does not work, your key may be replaced. To know the number of your dongle, have a look at the little circular white sticker inside the dongle that you can see through the transparent shell.

Audio - [SX2] SX 2 updates don't install !
The update automatically tries to install in a folder which is not the one where you previously installed SX 2. Start the procedure again, but make sure you select the right folder....

General - [SX2] How to update the SX 1 dongle for SX 2 ?
The update can be done with Internet only. Here's how to proceed if you don't have any connection on your DAW computer.

On the SX 2 install CD, there's a folder "Additional Content", then "Copy Protection Driver". You just have to install, on the machine having a connection, the
Copy Protection Driver.exe program.

Reboot the computer, plug the SX 1 dongle, go into "Start/Programs/SynCroSoft" and start the copy protection update Wizard. Follow the indications, then enter the furnished update serial number.

Then, plug the dongle into the DAW computer after having installed Cubase SX 2. That's all !

General - [SX] Message "No Protection Device Connected"
Two solutions : you have bought Cubase SX. In this case, check you correctly plugged the dongle in the USB port. The install has to be done like this : install Cubase without pluging the key, reboot the computer, plug the key. Second solution : you have downloaded Cubase SX somewhere on the Internet, so you are the happy owner of an illegal copy of the CD, but you missd the key ! Solution : buy the software to your prefered Cubaseller, or try the Cubase SX1 demo ,o)

Plug-in - [SX2] Some Plug-ins don't work with SX 2
It is probably because they are not compatible with VST 2.3 (for example Kontakt when SX2 has been released). While waiting for the update of your Plug-Ins, go in Device / Plug-in Information et tick the box Old Host Behaviour. Yes, not really obvious ;o)

General - [SX] How to save your preferences ?
Do you have to format your hard drive? And re-install all the stuff ? So you will lose all the preferences which took a long, long time to set ;o/ But if you use Ceedjay's trick...

General - [SX] Cubase SX 1.02 or SL under Windows 98
Steinberg recommend Windows 2000 or XP for Cubase SX and SL. But (from version 1.02 onwards, for SX), they enabled the installation under Windows 98, without giving any technical support. So, it's at your own risks...

For SX then, version 1.02 must be used, but as version 1.00 won't install under 98 and as version 1.02 is just an update, how is this possible ? Simple : contact your distributor to obtain a CD holding the full install of 1.02 version.

Score - [SX] Strange symbols in the Score Edit
Does the Score Edit display anything ? It's a known and conceded bug. Here's the tip to correct it :
  • Go into the Control Panel
  • Open "Fonts"
  • Make Control-A in order to select all of them
  • Then, make "View / Refresh"
  • Unselect the fonts by clicking near one of them
  • Start SX again
  • Send your thanks to ECVST ;o)

General - Is Cubase Mac OS X compatible ?
There is no version working on Mac OS X. Cubase SX works only on OS X

General - Is Cubase Windows XP compatible ?
Cubase 5.x is perfectly compatible with XP et 2000. For the 3.x versions , the only compatible version is the very latest : the 3.7R2

Audio - How to get a very low latency with a Sound Blaster Live ?
Use the "unbridled" APS drivers for the SB Live ! (see the link below) They allow you to reach a latency of 8ms. Be careful, they are not compatible with Windows 2000 / XP. Another solution : With Cubase 5.0, we've got a Full-Duplex DirectX ASIO which gives a latency of 43ms

General - [VST] How to save my prefs ?
When loading, Cubase 5.x opens the Song "def.all" which is in the Steinberg / Cubase folder. Create your own set-up, the one you want when loading or when selecting "New song" and save them replacing the old "def.all"

Audio - [VST] I've just got 16 Audio tacks and the advertising says 72 or 128 tracks !
This is a trap ! In the menu Options / Audio Setup / System, you can choose the maximum number of audio tracks your Song can contain. By default it is set on 16, you just need to modify this value. See "how to save my preferences" to know how to get a new default setup

General - [VST] Why does the C6 key on my keyboard stop the playback ?
By default, this key is set to stop the playback in Cubase. To disable this function, open the menu Edition / Preferences / key Commands and disable "remote active"

Plug-in - What's the difference between Insert and Aux-send ?
Very very long to explain. But we've written a page on the subject ;o)

More about it...

Audio - When recording, I've got an awful echo !
This is a problem with the latency. In the Audio Options of Cubase, you must select the ASIO Driver if your soundcard has one or disable the monitoring

The English manual is on the Cubase original CD in PDF format. The French version must be asked to your local dealer
