SALON DE LA MUSIQUE 2000

L'ECVST AT THE "SALON !"

Like the year spent, l'Espace Cubase VST was present at the "Salon de la musique" and this, thanks to Steinberg-France which had made us a small place on its stand and had rented a PC so that we can present the site. First thing : we highly thank them and see you next year Jean-Marc,o)

This page will be divided into two parts :

  1. What did one see on the Steinberg stand ?
  2. What did occur on ECVST's stand ?

WHATS'S NEWS ?

The Steinberg actuality is pretty rich in this moment! Between very next version 5.0 of Cubase, WaveLab 3.0, the VST Instruments and Nuendo, one did not know any more where to give demonstration !

Let us recapitulate: to date, May 16 2000, Cubase is in version 3.7R2 on PC and in 4.1R2 on Mac These two versions will pass into 5.0 June or next July! The PC version thus makes up for in the passing its lost time on Apple, the two 5.0 versions will be identical. To go round all the innovations here would be impossible. There are to any. Of course, we will very soon make you a complete topo on the subject. The Cubase VST and Score versions are now 24 bits audio resolution whereas the VST 24 becomes the VST 32 (resolution 32 bits floating), with one plug-in True Tape (Magnéto kind) in ENTRY and a powerful algo of dithering. There was a beta version on the stand, a very stable version already and which left thoughtfull. It is probable that it is necessary to re-examine a little our work practices (especially on PC) because the interface was (finally ?) altered. The tools available with the mouse are more numerous, the short cuts keyboard are configurable at will, and there is a system of safeguard of configurations of windows which was missing with PC version. Of a simple shortcut, configurable, one can recall a whole windows set as defined before.

The management of the plug-ins was also re-examined. Stop the plug-in whose parameters are to be adjusted with an improbable precision while turning a recalcitrant button ! The parameters are regulated thanks to pull knobs. Simple, effective, imparable ! The inspector undergone a revolution and sees himself given out a number of quite practical adjustments. In fact, one would need pages and pages to expose all the innovations. What we will make soon !

In short, Cubase carries on its road, with always its small innovative side. Version 5.0 should definitively make conceal the scandalmongers which still take it for a toy! Nevertheless to note the small last of the family, Cubasis VST, which is neither more nor less than one Cubase VST limited in its number of eq, starting of effects, of audio tracks (32 all the same!) etc. If one adds to that that it is delivered with WaveLab Lite and what to engrave, for 990 FF, here's something to start well for not too much...

In little time, Steinberg imposed its VST Intruments concept. Small recall: the VST Instruments are virtual synths in the form of VST plug-ins, controllable by Midi, therefore the sounds are calculated by the processor. Many creators quickly made profitable this new standard to develop plug-ins able to simulate synthetizers of legend, whose cost on the market of the bargain became prohibitory. One could see on the stand of the demonstrations of the Model E, the Pro Five, the PPG and LM4 (see presentation of LM4). For the amateurs of "vintage" sonorities, it is clear that these thingies are jewels ! The great interest to have them in VST Intruments version is to be able to have an infinite number of banks, to have a comfortable polyphony and moreover, to be able to load several modules of same synth in Cubase for the price of only one! It is not all! One can also record the movements of the pots and thus re-examine them to move with the reading. To be readen Mailing-List Cubase VST it is clear that the virtual synths have a great future. You can go on Steinberg.net to download demonstrations or sound banks...

On the stand, we met, too briefly, a certain Philippe GOUTIER. Doesn't this name say anything to you? Perhaps, but if it is said to you that he is the originator of... WaveLab ? Will know how this boy is responsible up to 95 % of this superb software ! Moreover, it could be that... Worse, hold on ! Returning soon, we will have a surprise for you !

While waiting, Steinberg had in demonstration this slaughter which is WaveLab 3.0. Imagine WaveLab 2.0, of which audio the edition part did not change too much, but which is seen now equipped with an assembly bench ! And yes, WaveLab becomes multitrack ! As for Cubase 5.0, to want to make the turn in 10 lines of it is an utopia, we will return there more in length soon. The market of this software seems to be radio stations for example. During the demonstration, one could see on the assembly bench a rather astonishing trick: an audio file cause a drop in the noise level of another as soon as it was read. Ideal out of stations to conceive a jingle. In the same way, WaveLab is able to be put in recording automatically as of detection of a signal, with adjustment of threshold. Perfect to get old magneto tapes in digital format. One loads 4 hours of reading, one makes Record, and let's go to the bar, WL made the rest! WaveLab is able to manage in a transparent way files bigger than 2 Gigas, limiting of Windows.... In short, Philippe worked well and WaveLab is the ideal companion of Cubase...

The last large piece of this show 2000, Nuendo. "Heu, that does it !" Nuendo is an audio station intended for the post-production, movies, tv etc. All the people present at the demonstrations remained on, on, in short, they were "bluffées"! The audio edition is of an astonishing power and the management of famous Surround is one of the best conceived to date, although the dedicated plug-ins are optional. We advise you to read the the presentation that we already made. Steinberg wants to position Nuendo elsewhere than on the ground of Cubase obviously but it is clear that wanting to make simple audio recording with Nuendo is attracting. Attention however, the price is not the same. Moreover, Nuendo is conceived to work with top-of-the-range audio interfaces whose prices largely exceed a simple ISIS. "It does not remain about it less than software, plus interfaces, more plug-ins Surround gives a price quite lower than a system containing dedicated DSP, follow our glance.

Here approximately what it was necessary to see this year. To be noted: the absence of the competition which did not condescend (Samplitude except) to come to the meeting from its public. And there, one has to admit a thing: Cubase is more than one software, it is a state of mind and a family. Meet people of Steinberg-France is always a pleasure so much their intact passion since years is communicative. So, one gives appointment for next year ?

L'ESPACE CUBASE VST AU SALON !

So, it is recreation : moreover, that lasted 5 days ! Here's a small picturesque summary of the best moments...

Sebastien METROT the fair one, who doesn't shout at Igor ,o) Igor, who held the stand ECVST during 3 days, still many thanks Igor !

Regis LAMORA, very sad, isn't he, to meet its god, Ron THAL !

From left to right : Larsen, Yann EIRIN, FeedBack, Arnaud MELESE, Jean-Marc THIEBAUD and Serge PERATHONER

Regis LAMORA, FeedBack, Gilles RAFFELSBAUER, Larsen, Yann EIRIN and... Francis LAI ! NB : you can see well that FeedBack is just a little smaller than Regis !

Regis LAMORA, after years of feeding-bottle, discovers solid food, under the tenderized glance of FeedBack !

The Steinberg-France gang ! We understand better why competition didn't come to the show, uh uh !

Great moment on the stand LANEY, Christophe GODIN and Ron THAL in total improvisation. Ron THAL who will give later a guitar lesson to FeedBack and Regis LAMORA, the snap !

Ricardo SERRA (Steinberg-France) and Stephane "Pipine" PENAU, always so thirsty, hem, of knowledge, of course !

Arnaud MELESE, marked forever not to see WaveLab on MacOS, sorry No !

Regis, the good little devil !!!

Philippe LOISEAU (Steinberg-France) and the very very very funny Steinberg Girls...

And finally, the teams ECVST and Steinberg-France joined together

Let's meet again the next year for an another festival. Meanwhile, let's not loose what links us all : passion.
